Changing expectations
Most of us expect to get old. We expect to have joint problems, uncooperative
bowels and 'what-ja-say?' hearing. Strangely enough, that is not the price
we are expected to pay for advanced age. We are protected by our biology
only until we have passed on our genes through offspring - your body is
designed to protect you long enough to have children and raise them. That's
it. After that, you're expected to go downhill. It was only after the mid
1800's that we could strive to live beyond our 50's. So, if you look at
aging from the perspective of what's in the interest of your genes, you
can understand that aging isn't the master plan for your body, but just
an offshoot of the biology of life.
Your body is a vehicle and needs to be cared for. While preventative care
is important, the real secret to longevity is not whether you get ill or
have an injury - it's how well you recover and repair. As we get older,
cells lose their resilience and their ability to repair, so if you maintain
healthy habits you can boost your resilience and probably add many more
healthy years to your life. How you deal with stress, staying out of the
sun, moderate exercise and a healthy diet can slow down the rate of aging.
Your job is to manage both these external and internal forms of aging.
No matter what kind of life you've already led, aging can be slowed down.
Restricting calories, improving your strength and getting quality sleep
can add many quality years to your life. Within three months of changing
a behaviour, we begin to see changes in life expectancy. So, start now,
and embrace the youth that you have today for a younger tomorrow.
